There was a point in my life, right around my wedding, that I was so miserable with my job but so complacent that I felt like I really needed to find help. You can read more about the reasons surrounding my exit in my blog post here: Why I Left a Six-Figure Job. But, I felt like there was no one else to turn to and talk about my feelings because nobody in my inner circle knew that I was contemplating leaving. The owner of the company that I worked for, at the time, was really mistrustful of his employees so I felt like I couldn’t talk about my job search for fear of it getting back to him.
So, instead, I turned to books. I actually listened to a lot of books on Audible on my way to work just to find the motivation to get through my day. I’d put my headphones on right before my commute to work and immediately on my way home so that I could feel some kind of joy and positivity when I felt like there was none surrounding me at the office.
The multiple books that I read gave me exactly the kind of motivation that I needed to send out my resume and go on interviews with a refreshed sense of self. They honestly helped me look at work in a new light and feel like I had so much more to offer. After three months of searching, I eventually did land a new role that was exactly the kind of challenging work that I felt like I was missing for years.
The books below are not only good reads in and of themselves, but they were super helpful to me when I needed to find joy in my work again.
